What the numbers mean

↓ Download speed

Download speed is how quickly data reaches your device. It affects website loading, streaming, app downloads and large file transfers. It is normally shown in megabits per second (Mbps).

↑ Upload speed

Upload speed is how quickly your device sends data. It matters for video calls, cloud backups, uploading videos and sharing large files.

↔ Ping / latency

Ping is the round-trip response time, measured in milliseconds. Lower latency usually feels more responsive in online games, calls and interactive applications.

Why results can vary

Wi-Fi quality, VPNs, device load, browser limits and nearby network traffic can change the result. Run the test more than once if a number looks unusual.

How to read your internet speed test

A speed test is most useful when you look at download, upload and ping together. A high download number can make streaming and downloads feel fast, while low latency can matter more for gaming or a live video call. The best result for you depends on the number of people, devices and applications sharing the connection.

Is 25 Mbps fast enough?

Around 25 Mbps can be enough for browsing, HD video and a smaller number of connected devices. If several people stream, game, download or work from home at the same time, more bandwidth gives useful headroom.

What about 100 Mbps?

100 Mbps is a comfortable level for many homes and can support multiple simultaneous activities, including high-resolution streaming and large downloads. Real Wi-Fi performance may still be lower than the plan speed.

Wi-Fi vs. Ethernet

If you want to troubleshoot a slow connection, compare a Wi-Fi test with a wired Ethernet test when possible. A large difference often points to Wi-Fi range, interference or router placement rather than the ISP connection.

Mbps is not MB/s

Internet plans are usually advertised in megabits per second (Mbps), while file sizes are often shown in megabytes (MB). Eight bits make one byte, so a 100 Mbps connection has a theoretical maximum near 12.5 MB/s before protocol overhead and real-world limits.

Tip: for a cleaner comparison, pause large downloads and cloud backups, disconnect a VPN if you are testing your normal ISP path, and run two or three tests at different times of day.

What is a good internet speed?

For many households, roughly 25 Mbps can handle everyday browsing and HD streaming, while 100 Mbps or more provides more room for several devices, 4K video and larger downloads. The right speed depends on how the connection is used.

What is a good ping?

Lower is better. Under about 20 ms feels excellent, 20–50 ms is generally very responsive, and higher latency becomes more noticeable in fast-paced gaming, live calls and remote-control applications.

Why is my speed lower on Wi-Fi?

Distance from the router, walls, interference, crowded Wi-Fi channels and the capabilities of the router and device can all reduce throughput. Testing near the router or with Ethernet helps separate Wi-Fi limitations from the internet connection.

Why do different speed tests show different results?

Different tests use different servers, routes, file sizes and measurement methods. Network traffic also changes from moment to moment, so small differences between tests are normal.

Does a VPN affect a speed test?

It can. A VPN adds encryption and sends traffic through an additional server, which may reduce throughput or increase latency depending on the provider and server location.
